Artist Spotlight - Sam Scales
“It all started with a desire to be outside. To be connected to something real.”
- Sam Scales
This is a name you are not likely to forget! Sam Scales creates beautiful, delicate illustrations and photography derived from his affinity for the great outdoors.
Sam graduated with a first class honours in Illustration and printmaking in 2016. Having moved to Cornwall - the Southwestern tip of England - at a young age, Sam draws his inspiration from his genuine love for the coast, which comes across in every image he creates.
This makes his work perfect for coastal homes, or for those (like Sam) with a passion for the seaside. Describing his art, Sam explains to us his favourite quote, and his mission through his stunning reflections of nature;
“‘It's much more about what you feel, not what you see' I always feel I'm looking to describe a certain way of feeling, to understand what I see in the world. Most of the time I’m searching for some kind of peace or calmness, to show the natural beauty within the world.
I always believe that if you show the beauty in something , you can make people care and protect that thing. So I guess with a long shot, I would love people to take something from my work; whether it’s seeing something in a different way or wanting to care/ protect that thing.
On a personal level drawing and photography allows me to slow down. To take a step back, watch and listen. You’ll be surprised at the subtle changes you see when you do this. Whether it’s how wildlife interacts with its habitat, the way light hits and reflects off the coastline or how the seasons change the look and feel of a place.”
All of Scales’ illustrations are lovingly hand deckled and finished in hand stained Jacobean frames. They look just perfect as collections of three or four, and can be mixed and matched.
Alongside the intricate drawings, Sam captures gorgeous stills of the ocean, which are hugely impactive and popular as triptychs. These images are so evocative, you can almost smell the sea salt in the air.
